1.12.1 Policy
Departmental vehicles shall be used for official purposes only and operated in a safe, lawful, and accountable manner. All employees shall exercise due care and comply with applicable laws and agency standards while operating any departmental vehicle.
1.12.2 Purpose
To establish clear standards for the authorized use, operation, and accountability of departmental vehicles.
1.12.3 Definitions
1.12.3.1 Departmental Vehicle: Any vehicle owned, leased, or assigned to the agency.
1.12.3.2 Authorized Operator: An employee approved to operate a departmental vehicle who possesses a valid driver’s license.
1.12.4 Procedures
1.12.4.1 Authorized Use
Vehicles shall be used for official duties only.
Personal use is prohibited unless expressly authorized.
1.12.4.2 Authorized Users
Only approved employees with a valid driver’s license may operate vehicles.
Employees shall immediately report any change in driving status.
1.12.4.3 Safe Operations
Operators shall obey all traffic laws and wear seatbelts.
Distracted or reckless driving is prohibited.
Vehicles shall be operated with due regard for safety at all times.
1.12.4.4 Emergency Operations
Emergency operation shall be limited to authorized personnel and situations.
Use of emergency equipment shall comply with law and training.
1.12.4.5 Inspections and Maintenance
Vehicles shall be inspected prior to use.
Damage or mechanical issues shall be reported immediately.
Vehicles shall be maintained in a clean and serviceable condition.
1.12.4.6 Accident Reporting
All accidents shall be reported immediately to a supervisor.
Required reports shall be completed before the end of the shift unless otherwise directed.
1.12.4.7 Detainee Transport
Vehicles shall be searched before and after transport.
Detainee shall be properly restrained at all times.
1.12.4.8 Prohibited Conduct
Transporting unauthorized passengers is prohibited.
Tobacco use in departmental vehicles is prohibited.
Alcohol or drug use prior to or during vehicle operation is prohibited.
1.12.4.9 Accountability
Employees are responsible for the proper use and care of departmental vehicles.
Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action.
1.12.5 Training
Employees shall receive training on vehicle operation and applicable policy requirements.
1.12.6 Review
This policy shall be reviewed annually and updated as necessary.
